Who were the Warrens?
What clues did you notice in the painting?
Elvira and Lester Warren and their daughter Elsie had this portrait painted in about 1843. The family moved to Calais, Vermont in 1844. Look carefully for the gold crosses that Lester and Elvira are wearing around their necks. Lester Warren was a minister at the Old West Church.
Elsie was about 3 years old when this portrait was painted. She is holding a white rose and wearing a white dress. These clues suggest that she is a pure and innocent little girl.
The books behind the family indicate that they were educated. Lester was a minister and knew how to read. Did you notice the pocket watch peeking out of Elvira’s pocket? What do you think this clue says about her?
